Avon Medical Centre is short staffed

11 Feb 2022 | News

Avon Medical Centre is short staffed at the moment, as some of our doctors have left or are leaving soon. We're doing things a bit differently to ensure everyone gets the right medical care as soon as possible.

We are working hard to find new doctors, but there is a nationwide shortage which is making it difficult.

We are still here for our patients though. Part-time doctors from out of town will be helping out at the practice, and virtual consults will also be available.

To ensure everyone gets the right medical care as soon as possible, we're doing things a bit differently while we look for some new doctors.

  • To look after our community best, a doctor will discuss your concerns during a phone triage call to decide on the most appropriate way to meet your needs.
  • Some GP consultations at the practice will be available for people who need to be seen kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face).
  • We'll also be booking virtual consultations. If you don’t have a smartphone, device or internet, you can have a virtual consultation from one of the rooms at the practice (bookings are essential).
  • Our awesome nurses will be delivering their normal services.
  • You can use our patient portal to access your medical records, view test results and order repeat prescriptions. Our friendly reception team can help you get it set up.
  • The emergency departments at Taranaki Base Hospital or Hāwera Hospital are available for emergencies.
  • If it’s not an emergency, you can call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free 24-hour health advice or find health information at
  • You can go to a pharmacy to ask for advice on minor medical issues or health concerns.
