Measles alert in New Zealand - What you need to know

29 Oct 2025 | Health notice

Measles cases have been detected in parts of New Zealand. Here’s what you need to know to keep yourself and your whānau well.

If you’re unwell

  • Stay home and call your general practice or Healthline (0800 611 116) for advice.
  • Some common measles symptoms include fever, cough/runny nose/red eyes, then a blotchy rash a few days later.

Protecting your whānau

  • Check that you and your children are up to date with the MMR vaccine. Vaccination with the MMR vaccine is the best way to protect against measles.
  • If you’re unsure, your general practice can check your records and book you in for the vaccine.

Going to a practice

  • If you suspect you have measles, please phone ahead. We will organise a safe plan for care.

You can get free health advice from a registered nurse 24 hours a day from Healthline on 0800 611 116. For more information we encourage you to visit the Healthify website, or get in touch with your GP practice:
